Flying Field
So a friend / co-worker that also flies rc helicopters and planes has been getting into the hobby more and more the past year or so and is becoming a really good pilot at both aircraft. The problem now is that I think as he gets better, wants to fly more and ends up buying larger aircraft he needs a better place to fly. The local parks and fields usually seem to "tolerate" it for a short time but one never knows how long that will last.
Honestly if you have anything bigger than a park flyer or small helicopter you really should not be at a park or related anyhow. More than likely unless you are there at the crack of dawn there will be others there enjoying the park and the last thing you want to do is put them in danger just as you would not want them to do to you.
So because of the larger planes and helicopters he has recently build and started flying and in reality all of them because they are all essentionally flying lawn mowers and could hurt someone. Anyway, being responsible and not wanting to deal with any issues or googly onlookers that dont realize the dangers he has started looking into flying fields around the area.
A few weekends back he finally received his AMA license in the mail (something you have to have for insurance purposes at any of the actual flying fields and for good reason). Once he had this in his possession he went down with his family to one of the nice fields in Carson City, about 49 miles away from where I am at and probably 22 from him.
He did not have the best of days flying because of an issue that he had with his electronics and entirely his own fault / doing unfortunately. So he managed to get a flight of about 30 seconds - those kinds of days are the worst! He was able to experience and better understand the flying fields and why they are a great choice for a place to fly. Sure you have to pay a small membership but you are covered all the time any time and can fly without worrying about anyone being in the way, asking you to leave and so on. Best of everything.
Well this weekend, Friday to be specific since it is a holiday for us at work, he is going to go look at the one that is out here by me. I should probably look into it as well, its only 10 miles from the house and would be a great place for me to fly and not have to worry about finding a location, and all of the other things that he worries about that I just mentioned. More on this later in the week if I decide to head out there with him or not. Worst case he will certainly let me know what he thinks of it and how it compares to the other one he has been to. Whats more is if I decided to start doing some FPV flying I could much more easily and safely do it at a location like that.
Decisions, decisions I guess. I mean it's only $100/year to be a member and a one time initiation fee of $25 (sort of odd, but whatever - they should just say $125 the first year then $100/year after). Oh well it has worked for them I suppose, I just think that the term "initiation fee" is more of an old school one that people are not as friendly about anymore. If they on the other hand hear what the fees are the first year, then that they are reduced the second year that may be more appealing. But again, what do I know - it's their club and seems to have been running for over a decade.
Cubed
Today at the studion I think my day is full of meetings and a little bit of development for localization of a game that I am working on, well finishing up now that it has gone through our testing group and is coming back with the final "push" of fixes and/or suggestions.
I do still have to finish the mid-year reviews for my group and get all of that out of the way so they not only know where they stand but I know where they would like to go from here. Once done it will be time to get individual meetings on the schedule and that sort of housekeeping.
That's A Wrap
Otherwise see what I mean by saying it has been surprisingly quiet? I will take it though, it's super nice to be able to hit the gym in the afternoon for a change and not have to worry about what is going down or who may be looking for me. That is generally never, or rarely the case but with all of the layoffs and odd firings going on the past 2 weeks it has been more of that. Thanks to all things that are good that we are past that hump in the road - for now anyway.
