Fiscal Mid-Year

Not much time to write today unfortunately. I have another crazy busy day at the studio trying to get not only my MBO's into the system for 2014 but also my teams goals and objectives.

Reviews

Everyone has their own feelings about review time. Some like and appreciate it because it gives them the opportunity to work on career growth and development. Others have hopes that they will turn into successes, the goals that is, so they can use it as ammo when we start taking money and options as well as bonuses at year end. Then there are those they feel they are a huge waste of time, a burden and they do what they have to do to get through them for the year and do little more than go through the paces.

All of this is just fine to be honest. I personally don't want a team full of over achievers just like I don't want a team of under achievers. It takes a mix of both and you get the best content out of such a mix. This way I have those that want to change the world, write new tools, develop new processes and so on which is great. At the same time I have those that want to do a great job, feel good about what they do and go home at the end of the day feeling fulfilled but no longer pondering the "what-ifs" of the days events as an over achiever might take home.

This being my first year doing the reviews I am sure that it will be quite the eye opener and help me to better accomplish them next year. No matter, good or bad, they are here and I am tackling them head on so I will have to wait and see how it works out. This year I tied mine directly to my team. As their manager I felt this was appropriate because I will only success if I give them the necessary tools and support to also succeed. I may be shooting myself in the foot on that one and have to rethink it next year, I guess we will see.

That will do it for today, it has been just as busy as I expected it to be when I woke up this morning. Thankfully I was able to get all of the goals for my team pushed down to them so they can work on getting their specific career goals pushed back to me for approval by the end of the day tomorrow.

My goals were also completed and delivered to my interim manager until we find a replacement for my previous manager. I hope that mine will be approved as they are a real pain to compose. It always seems trivial when you think about goals and objectives but much harder to put into writing.
