Kindle Paperwhite

So it's a super windy Saturday but at least it's fairly warm out, well warmer than it has been the past week but not quite summertime warm. For some reason I am actually pretty happy about it. Sweating all day or having the AC run non-stop looses its charm quickly.

Paperwhite

So I have been wanting a Kindle pretty much ever since they came out to market but have managed to somehow put it off up until now. I am thankful that I did because the newest model, the Kindle Paperwhite, is an excellent choice for reading books, magazines (small selection) and newspapers - heck they even have some basic games available as well for only $0.99 if you are in need of a gaming fix. The iPad has its pro's as well, but many more cons. For example I can never just read - I am getting pop-up notifications, start wondering what is going on with Facebook friends and so on so its easy, really easy actually to get side tracked.

The media is not very expensive all things considered and whats-more is if you are an Amazon Prime member (I am not currently but it may be worth the $79/year) they you can check out books just as you would at your local library. Granted they are not going to have everything, but at the time I am writing this entry they have just over 180,000 available so I think most everyone would be able to find something to read that was of interest. Plus the Prime membership gives you a lot of other perks as well, such as 2 day shipping on pretty much everything and so on.

The big selling point for us was that there are several books we have been wanting to get and read, from technical to healthy lifestyle and anyone that reads knows, you can lock up a pretty decent amount of cash into books unless you buy used. For the price of our Kindle Paperwhite ($179 minus nearly $20 in discounts I had available through Best Buy) that worked out to be about the same as we would have spent on 3 or 4, maybe 5 of the books we want.

Sure we still have to purchase them but the difference is that we can have them backed up by Amazon for ever and get them when ever we choose (I bought the WiFi / 3G version - ad supported since it was ~$20 less and the ads don't bother me in the least). The books are generally 1/3 the cost give or take from what we have looked into so far - and again if you are a Prime member and they have them in their library well then they are free.

All in all I think if you like to read, even just on occasion I think the Paperwhite is a great device to do just that. With the iPad I tend to get fatigued as well from holding a much heavier, and rather sharp on the edges device - not to mention the aforementioned A.D.D. issues of swapping to other applications while I want to be reading.

The only real negative that I have is that Amazon does not provide you with an AC charger and they are not cheap costing $20 on the high side and about 60% that everywhere else. I have a 5w USB charger that I can utilize so its not a huge deal, it would have just been nice if they had included one with the device. I can only assume they thing everyone has a home computer to plug into for charging, if not they can spend the cash to get the adapter - dunno. It just seems that its one of those things they probably get made in China for $0.50 and turn around and sell us for $20.

Other than that I would say go for it if you are in the market for something or are looking to buy one for an avid reader in your life, I think they will really enjoy it. Now if only Amazon could make it so they have a bit of a book smell, that would really top off the experience.

Turn The Page

Ok its time to jump back into what is left of this day. I have not done any more work in the garage or shed so far this weekend so I need to get on it and get "something" accomplished so I am not kicking myself come Sunday night.

I did manage to sit out back with Cicely and Oggy for a little while this morning and get some sun which was really nice. Played fetch with the fuzzy kid for a little bit also which is always fun. Came back in and flew a few helicopters in the flight simulator (I still suck but am practicing as much as I can to get better). Only real problem is that right now I am getting really sleepy and am ready for a nap cool couch - hmm, we will see - that is all I need to do is use up another hour or so of my day napping on the couch! Ahh, its the weekend - I will do what feels right and my body tells me to do.

Photo: New Kindle Paperwhite. Really nice reading device compared to my iPads. Not sure why the iPhone 5 camera thought it was a good idea to add the blotchy red area on the cover, but what-ever.
