Early start today because Cicely needed to get into the office early to attend our inaugural in-house game conference that started at 8:00 AM. We ended leaving the house just a couple minutes after 7:00 so we were cutting it close to get there in time.
Thankfully the traffic situation was not too bad and we made good time, showing up just a minute or so after 8:00, making her still arrive on time. Everyone was busy getting breakfast, chatting and related anyhow so in reality she could have easily been 5 to 10 minutes late and still been okay.
Wednesday & Thursday
Tomorrow, Wednesday, will be more of the same because it's the second and final day of the scheduled events of the conference. Once that part of the week is out of the way we dive into things that I need to do and me causing us to leave early for work
Thursday I need to get here early because I have a class to take that I keep missing out on. It has been offered several times as well as online and each time I have managed to not be available to take it or fit it into my day.
I will start by saying that It's not the most exciting class or topic although an important one. We are scheduled to cover and review all of the things relating to time away from work, scheduled or not. As well as leaves of absence and the benefits that kick in when you need to take time for family or personal situations, generally those that are unplanned although at times they can be planned events if relating to childbirth for example.
All of these topics on their own can add up to something that appears simplistic though in practice each can prove to be complicated and a real pain in the ass to make sure it's all done correctly.
Not to forget that you're messing with someones livelihood and decisions they make around the benefits available. That said; you want to be certain you are doing it as accurately as possible as well as not adversely costing the company more money than necessary for benefits. Worst case, through taking the class, you have names to put to the information gathering you may one day need.
A big problem that's never fun to discuss is that it's not uncommon for employees to sue corporations over this type of benefit. That really sucks if you're the manager responsible. Generally the reason behind the lawsuit is something so basic that could have been easily taken care of if only the right information was provided through a class such as the one I will be in tomorrow. Let's hope I'm never in the situation and even more that I'm never part of a lawsuit for this or related!
Reviews
So we are nearly into the middle of the week and I have not completed any of the mid-year reviews for my team! I feel like such a slacker because of it too! The review process is important to me, both getting mine as well as giving them to those on my team. The last thing I want to do is make them think I don't care.
Anyway, I will do my best to get some of them done. Either with the time left today, possibly tonight if I take the laptop home or worst case in the morning when we get here early again. If all else fails I will have to start working on the over the weekend, something I would really rather not have to do.
The most difficult part of getting here early is that then everyone is wanting to get with me for one reason or another. This eats into the day big time. It's a big part of my job to be there for the team of course, it's just a little more difficult when I know I have so much else to get done to remain engaged with the team - ahh so much, so little time!
Cycling
Last night I only did a ride just short of thirteen miles. Unfortunately the one I chose was on the east coast so it did not post until today which means that I had less than my goal of eighteen miles for yesterday. I did manage to do one quick lap that did count for yesterday, I was still short on miles though. I think this only gave me 13.1 miles for Monday, five shy of where I wanted to be.
Not sure how many miles I will be able to put in today, I am already sitting at 13 or so from last nights east coast ride, then I will try to do another ten on the stationary at the gym. That will be pretty good for Tuesday but I will still be short those few miles from Monday night.
My legs are starting to feel the effects of pushing for 1250km in one month that's for sure! I'm confident that I will succeed at the goal I have set although I won't lie and say that it's going to be smooth sailing, it's going to hurt and towards the end I know I am going to want to quit! I'm stubborn that way though, I won't!
Worst case is that I run out of days to complete the 1250km challenge and only complete the 1235km challenge. It's scheduled to last several days longer so that gives me a fighting chance to meet the goal that I have set!
On that note, wish me luck because for today I'm going to call this entry done and get down to the gym to put in a few of those miles I was just talking about!
Photo: The cassette and rear of my frame mounted to my KICKR trainer. This thing is so awesome and really helps me work on my power, cadence and distance every time I get on it. More times than not its difficult to stop pedaling! Great investment that I have never regretted.
