We woke up early today so I could start on our taxes and Cicely could work on product for her upcoming venture. I really don't mind doing taxes but it's going to be a pain in the ass this year. Between us being married now and some other oddities it will be interesting and I will probably have to try a few different routes to see what works best, although if history holds true, the government still manages to bend us, the middle class, over!
H&R Block
Ok so about 3 hours into doing taxes I discovered an area where we could potentially get a good chunk more money back "maybe" although it's a little bit of a grey area with tons of taxation double-speak peppered through-out. I ran the numbers several different ways and came out with a couple different outcomes, dammit! What-to-do?
It was now time to start researching and calling around to see if friends or family had dealt with this situation. Unfortunately no-one had and the accountants we knew were not working over the weekend so more Google searches it would be.
We called H&R Block and to our surprise they were able to get us in relatively fast today. This should be interesting I thought, but at least they have a "if you don't like our numbers you don't pay" guarantee. I figured we have nothing to lose except an hour or 2 sitting there going through the process. I have already done it 4 times on my own today so what is once more. Generally our taxes are super easy, but a couple wrenches thrown in this time changed an otherwise easy tax day.
Well not much luck at H&R Block so we chose the "not going to pay because we did not like the numbers" route and left. The girl was super cool and very helpful but it was going to be nearly $200 in fee's and related to file the exact same return I can file at home for free. So we had to decline and it made us feel really bad. But $200 is $200 and we can use it as most can.
...And Submit
Time to start enjoying the rest of the weekend. I need to edit some photos for my step-mom Cyndi, that are of her daughter Brandy. She passed away many years ago and she only has 1 or 2 of them and they are starting to show some signs of aging and fading. I hope I can pull it off, she was such a little cutie I want to be able to bring the photo back to what it was.
On that note have a great Saturday whatever you happen to be doing. I am going to go enjoy the rest of mine now too!
