Backin' Up

Started today off with some good old Dunkin' Donuts coffee. I have not had it in a really long time because we don't have a Dunkin' Donuts in the area, actually most all of the donut shops went out of business in the past 2 to 6 years. A few even came back from the past, namely Krispy Kreme and it too went away within a couple years. Most people try hard to eat better nowadays so a greasy donut first thing in the morning just doesn't fit in their lifestyle. The funny part is that Krispy Kreme for example was always jam packed everyday, go figure?

FRINGE

Watched Friday's episode of FRINGE today since we could not manage to stay awake to watch it Saturday and Friday night we rented Men In Black III so there was no time to watch it. Awesome episode, I can't wait to see what happens next week. I don't like to put any spoilers in my posts but all I can say is that shxt is getting crazy and shxt is doing down!

Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear

I spent most of today backing shxt up. Getting files off of drives, then onto other drives or into the cloud. I did not realize how much data I have and it's a huge pain in the ass trying to figure out where to put it all in an organized and efficient manner.

Not to mention what stuff I really should trash and what should be saved. I am a major data pack-rat and just like that "thing" you find in the garage while spring cleaning that you have not seen in years, the minute you say hell-with-it and throw it out you suddenly need it.

Even more of a pain is that we use Macs and Windows based machines in the house so we run into file system issues and drives working on one platform while limited on another. Cloud storage does resolve this, but it's not free for the most part when you need decent amount. On top of it sharing the space with a significant other can be a pain if they organize differently and things of that nature. Sure you could have 2 accounts but that brings up even more issues.

We have a fair amount of photos and video as well that would be nice to store in one location. Probably much less than most, but enough. The problem with that is you have to figure out a way to back it up so its organized, available to everyone in the household and potentially shareable to show family and friends.

Who has the time to do this? I have our data fairly organized but all it takes is a software update of some sort to screw it all up in a big way (cough cough iPhoto has a habit of doing this). I don't really want all the photo's online at somewhere like Flickr because I am pretty sure that they, like most, compress uploads so you lose some quality and there is a fee, while small its still one more yearly bill.

I did put some video on YouTube, basically unedited so it does not have cool music or transitions, just video of a time and place we wanted to remember for example. But again, now things are getting spread out all over the internet as this is done.

Really there is no "perfect solution" to date and I think its something that will have to be figured out eventually by a company or group of companies with all the digital data flying around and only getting worse since smart phones appeared on the market and everyone is snapping photos and video without any regard to the amount of data they are actually using and will they require should they want to store the content off of a device.

Back in the day if you had a ton of photos there was a good chance that they were in family photo album or even an old shoe box and everyone knew where they were and how to find them. Currently if you passed away for example, its possible that no-one would ever know that you had a Flickr account, YouTube videos and so on, you get the idea, its all sorta lost and that is unfortunate.

I don't really have a solution and honestly I am not looking for one at the moment because I don't think its entirely possible other than having everything in the cloud "somewhere", and as organized as possible. Then I suppose you can have your passwords and information on the location of the photos, videos and related put in your will for your children and so on. If they are even interested in looking at them, but that is a whole other topic. Who then maintains the fees? Seems kinda fucked up to pass that on to your kids and loved ones once you are gone.

Dead Horse

I think I have beat the backing up of data topic way past its prime so I will digress and move on with my day. I think I am simply typing like a crazy man because of the non-stop flow of Dunkin' Donuts coffee I made myself this morning. Good thing its nice out today, if it were cold and snowy out I would probably be drinking it twice as fast and twice as much!

Paw-De-Cure

This afternoon it was time for the fuzzy kid to get his nail clipped at PetSmart. While he does not care much for the clipping of the nails, well grinding actually is what he gets done, he loves the part at the end where he gets a treat from the cashier. Honestly, I love that part too, watching him wait patiently in line is so dam cute!

Zapped

I have not mentioned it yet, but Tuesday I have to get an EMG test done. Basically they put a ton of needles in your legs,  into the muscles and nerves (or whatever body part is bothering you) and they send electricity through them, connecting "jumper cables" between them to check how long it takes for the current to get from one to the other and determine any nerve damage and related. Yea, should be about as fun as it sounds, NOT!

I am sure I will have more to write about that at that time. I know its going to suck-ass but if it helps me to figure out why my back and legs have been bothering me then it's totally worth it. I had an MRI done already and while it showed some problems, they were nothing totally out of the norm for someone my age and activity level so that was good news to hear.

Bye

Going to enjoy what is left of this Sunday and get off of the computer, iPad, iPhone and anything digital. I think a nice long cardio session on the treadmill and some weight training is in order to get me ready to kick off the week.
