Ride, Pool, Flat

Well first things first. I walked out to the garage this morning to get a tape measure out of the tool chest only to notice that Cicely's mountain bike had a completely flat rear tire. I mean WTF is that all about? I paid $60 extra bucks for her to have the tubeless setup and it took the shop we bought it from over 3 weeks to figure it out and it still is wrong! Oh and "the shop" is not referring to the guys at Black Rock, their shxt works every time.

So now I am out that money and still need to work on the bike so she can use it. For the time being I may just put the tube back in even though I don't want to do that. We have so many goat head thorns around here that she will get a flat in no time. Eventually I will just pull the tire and redo the tubeless setup the correct way. If the shop that attempted to do so fucked up the rim then I will have to upgrade her rims to another brand, nothing crazy, just something I can set up as tubeless for her.

What's my point to this rant? Is probably obvious but if not I will spell it out. My question is how can a shop have a bike for 3 weeks first of all to simply do a tubeless setup? Second how can they after said 3 weeks still manage to fuck up the simplest of upgrades that comes to them as a 100% self contained kit that any DIY'r can tackle? Last but most important, how in the hell can they honestly call themselves a "bike shop" with such shitty workmanship going out the door?

Sure we could take it back to them or call and complain about the $60 and go from there but I have spent enough time and energy with them so far. As of now, that shop is dead to me and will not earn another dime of my money. I would rather pay Black Rock to do the work on her bike (if they can since it's a brand they don't sell) before I will go back to their shop and get the free maintenance work done on it.

Imagine if she was on her own and could not fix it, she would be screwed. What's worse is imagine she was out pulling Zoey in the trailer and it blew out, could have been really bad either way. So yea, done with them, they are dead to me, so long and thanks for all the aggravation!

Awesome 1st Ride

I took the road bike out today for the maiden voyage and to get myself use to the clipless pedals and the the road bike in general. I have to say that without hesitation it was a friggin' blast of a ride. It's not better than my mountain bike rides, nor are the mountain bike rides better than it. They are each different in their own way and awesome in their own way as well. I am super stoked that I bought a road bike to add to the collection I am building.

"Dawn Patrol"

So I went to the Strava website and decided that because I could not find a route that others ride that I really wanted to ride I would just create my own with the route builder tools they have on the site. The builder is friggin' amazing and so much fun to do. I was able to create a short 4 mile loop that I named "Dawn Patrol". I chose this name because I think that its a great ride for me to take in the morning before work but anytime of day it would be nice - heck I did the route and almost noon and was just fine in the 90+ degree weather. Not the most ideal time of day to ride but it was what I had in front of me so it ended up being "the ideal time".

Anyway, on the route I used my new Garmin 810 once I had the route downloaded from Strava and put onto my device. It works great and gave me awesome turn by turn directions throughout the route that I made online prior. My only complaint is that at times it can tell you to turn a little early so you don't know which street to actually turn on if you are coming up to 1 and 1 almost immediately after. I understand it would be hard for it to tell you in that short space of time, especially if you were really hauling ass at that point. At the same time, other times it would not tell me until I was almost on top of the street I needed to turn onto.

I realize these are all bitchy first world problems and I need to just deal with it. I can almost bet if I was not in such a busy area, busy meaning lots of streets, cul-de-sac and houses that it has to be a little difficult to get the signal to you as fast as I probably want it. Overall it worked awesome and I only missed a couple turns and one time turned when I was not supposed to so I ended up going up this other cul-de-sac and in reality its all good, it will just add more miles to my ride. Another time I turned and did a bit of a horseshoe and again, only added some time and miles to the ride which was no big deal at all.

The route that I created and rode was estimated at just a hair over 4 miles for one completed lap. I actually started it a little way from the house just because the map is shared online so I don't want a bunch of people basically having a perfect map to my house or knowing what route I take on particular days. The cool thing is that I change stuff up so much and someone is always home that it would be extremely difficult to do so. No matter, error on the side of caution.

Once I was done with the first lap I was feeling pretty good and was surprised by how quickly that I did the entire loop! Because of this my head got big (aka I was over confident) and I figured "what the heck", I might as well do a second lap. Oh and I should mention that all of my riding was in a headwind. In hindsight it was the right thing to do, I had the energy and I pushed myself a little further than I planned to originally.

Although the climb that starts out my route about kicked my ass on lap 2. I had to really give it heck to get up the hill and focus every bit that I could. Once I was able to push up and over the hill I made a right turn and unclipped so I could stand and drink fluids and catch my breath for 5 minutes or so which was perfect.

OK, being honest and realistic the "climb" is not "that" much of one, a veteran rider would laugh at it and do it in the highest gear he or she has available simply to make a point. No matter, I completed the second lap and yes, my head was still telling me, hmm maybe one more?...

Heck no, the part of your brain that makes you come back to reality kicked in - thankfully, and so I made a few turns and headed back to the house, stopped out front to catch my breath for a few minutes, drank water and cooled down.

What an awesome ride, I honestly cant wait to take another one. I know that I need to make a few adjustments to make things that much better while out there but that is no big deal. One thing is the Garmin 810 needs to be out front a little more. If I was not using the turn-by-turn it would not be as big of a deal. But because I do / am, I need to be able to see the device better. Today when it beeped I had to sit up and sort-of lean back to read which direction I had to go, or if there was a problem with the direction I was going. The few times that I was going the wrong way the unfortunate part is that it only tells you to "head north" or something like that, on the bike, hell in my car, most times I am not going to be able to determine my direction on my own, that is the reason I bought a GPS!

Pool

Today I filled up Zoey's swimming pool with air and took it out back on the patio to fill it up with water, sit in the sun and let the water warm up. Around 4:00 we are taking her outside to try it out and see what she thinks. I hope that she enjoys it as much as we think that she will. We plan to enroll her into swimming lessons in a couple months as well. We would do it now, but the best age to start teaching them the basics, how to float on their backs and so on is around 6 months. More on how the swim went in tomorrows post most likely, well unless I forget!

Fork In Me

That is going to have to do it for today. I have around 20 minutes before we are going to take Zoey out to the pool, once we get one of her swimming suits on that grandma Kay bought her. I sure hope that she has fun, never know - she may freak out and after all of this water warming, pool filling and setup we may be outside and in the pool for minutes ha ha. Alright, for real this time - I hope you are having a great weekend and enjoying your Sunday.

We are a little busier next weekend with a BBQ over at Cicely's parents house for fathers day - should be fun. I am going to make sure to get a ride in that morning. Just have to decide whether it will be a road bike or a mountain bike ride. Until then, its back to work for 3 days, then school on Thursday and Friday - whew, getting there. After this weeks class I only have 3 classes left, thank all things that are good for that little miracle! Until next time, carry on....

Photo: A dramatic photo and edit of the aforementioned flat tire that the "not a bike shop" could not seem to figure out how to do correct even given 3+ weeks to do so.
