Teething Night

Last night was a pretty rough night for our little Zoey. We had to make a stop at the store on the way home to pick up a few things. Cicely ran into the store and I waited out in the car with Zoey since she was sleeping after a hard day at school. Less than a handful of minutes after Cicely left Zoey started grunting a little and kicking her leg like she does when she does not feel 100%.

Almost immediately grunting, grumbling little girl waking up turned into crying and kicking her legs really hard as though she was in a lot of pain. I was not sure what was going on with her. Was she hot, had a bad dream, something was pinching her, she was pissed and could not find her pacifier or what? So I just starting rubbing her head lightly, running my fingers through her hair and blowing on her a little bit to cool her down - she was already starting to feel a little warm.

Once Cicely was back I explained to her what was happening and she said that she bets that Zoey is having some teething pain and asked if she felt warm, yep - she did I said. Once we started driving she calmed down a little and tried to relax although she was still stomping her foot a little and it was obvious that she was just being a trooper and dealing with the pain as best that she could until we were back home and able to comfort her in a manner she deserved and needed.

Once home we immediately took her jacket and top layer of clothes off and started to cool her down. I fixed her a little bottle of cold water to drink with a sprinkle of sugar in it for flavor and soothing. Once she was finished with that, she seemed to be feeling a little better but you could tell she was still not her usual self.

I grabbed the temporal thermometer and took Zoey's temperature and just as Cicely said it would be if it was a teething issue it was exactly 99°. From her experience the past few times this has happened it's usually the sign that she is having some teething discomfort and we need to get the temperature to start to go down sooner than later otherwise she will be miserable and it will usually continue to climb and gets a little scary.

Next Cicely sat with her and cuddled on the big Lay Z Boy recliner while I went into the kitchen and grabbed a small dose of her liquid Tylenol. We try to wait as ling as we can before giving this to her, but have learned that once her temperature starts rising a little and does not change it's best to get ahead of it and so we did exactly that. Rather than give her a full dose, we only giver her half to three quarters at the most.

I would imagine that the Tylenol is safe and everything but when you have a kiddo that is growing and changing everyday the last thing we want to do is mess something up. Sure that may sound a little dramatic, but think of all those organs and stuff growing and things developing 24/7. Once she took the dose (she loves the flavor it's like candy I bet).

Anyway, once she took that we continued to rock her and snuggle, then came out and played a little bit while we let the medicine do its work. My guess is that within 15 minutes or so Zoey started rubbing her eyes. This is our signal that she is tired and ready for kisses and to snuggle into her crib, get tucked in and listen to ocean wave sounds as she drifts off to sleep.

For the next couple hours we would hear her in there grunting a little and making a few little whines but for the most part she was still sound asleep and on her way to a good nights rest.

Morning

By the next day, today, Zoey was back to herself and acted as though last night never happened. That is the great thing about kids, they are sorta like pets in that way. They don't worry about what happened yesterday or what might happen today, dwell on things out of their control or anything of that nature. Kids are living in the moment all the time.

If they are hungry they let you know. They then eat, get full and don't think about the next meal until their belly tells them that they are hungry again and need to let us know so we can fix it. Next they move on to what is now that thing in front of them and in the moment once again. Whether playing, napping or practicing reflexes and noises.

All said and done this round I am happy that she feels much better and was a happy little girl all day today. Playing, giggling and having a great time this morning with us. Playing at work, enjoying lunch and friends as well as having a good time after work when we finally got home and were able to play fetch with Oggy, blow some raspberries on Zoey's chubby belly and listen to her giggle.

Those smiles, giggles and little squirming squeaks make everything worthwhile for sure! I never realized how much happiness I could get out of listening to my child do the simplest of things such as laugh, make faces, giggle, blow raspberries by herself. Even more as she starts to become more alert and recognize her surroundings. It's both scary and exciting at the same time!
