Week 29!

Holy crap I cannot believe that Cicely and I are in week 29 of the pregnancy! We watched our weekly video update today to get info on what baby will be working on developing this week.

Sometimes it's reflexes and other times it's learning to blink, nibble on things like the umbilical cord or hiccuping which is thought to be caused by a reflex in the diaphragm while practicing breathing. Because the nasal passages opened up a couple weeks back the in and out breathing will be practiced even more.

At this stage it is a good time to start counting the kicks, flutters and movements as well. It's suggested to lay on your left side after a meal and count the kicks, bumps and movements. Baby should easily be up to 10 per hour which signifies a healthy active baby. Less than that does not necessarily mean anything is wrong - some expecting moms only count 4 or so per hour and that is OK as well, but probably a good thing to mention to the doctor next visit just to be certain.

A Friggin' JB Welded Crib  < "I scream while shaking my clinched fist in the air" >

Yea I absolutely love to build stuff I really do. It's a lot of fun for me because it's different than anything I do during the work week and gives me the opportunity to work with my hands - something I love doing.

Well the crib really tested my patience and skills last night. I mean I have rebuilt engines and much more intricate things that were more forgiving than this crib was! Most of it went together pretty good as far as the main frame was concerned. Probably only about an hour to have it done actually. Of course I had to talk Cicely into us getting the model with "the cool drawer underneath it".

OMG! This drawer was such a royal pain in the ass to build. It had more parts than the entire crib combined, it used those friggin' cam lock fasteners that I absolutely hate as well as these plastic type cam lock nuts to screw self taping screws into.

Pretty much right from the start I broke 2 of the 7 cam lock fasteners. Oh great now what do I do? Well I will tell you; I went out to the garage and mixed up a batch of JB Weld, came back into the house and filled in those holes with both the JB Weld and the broken fasteners. You will never see this repair and it will be stronger than the original I guarantee it.

Yea does not sound that bad does it? So why am I bitching you ask? Let me back up just a moment to the cam locks being broken. Initially my instinct was to go online and try to find some replacements. I did have a few in the garage but they were too tall. My searches turned up zero promising results but I pressed on, determined to find a fix.

After 20 to 30 minutes of searching I was not finding anything other than the stuff you would use to fix other brands of cheap furniture - something the crib is not - although the drawer is built more closely to that furniture it's solid wood not particle board.

Anyway, I was getting a bit frustrated, hungry and grumpy about it trying to decide what I was going to do to fix it. I could call the company (which Cicely did and they will probably send us out a replacement). I am not patient when it comes to this sort of thing so I don't want to wait 2 weeks for a couple cam lock fasteners to show up in the mail. We have to have that room ready for Cicely's mom to visit in less than a week. Plus the broken drawer pieces sitting there would only be a constant reminder of how pissed I was at that fuckin' drawer assembly, lol.

I was ready to give up and head to the garage to get one of the best things on earth - my JB Weld! It works on pretty much anything from plastic to wood and metals. When I raced I fixed so many things with it and never had a single issue so I knew it would work.

As I was getting ready to end my internet search and head out to the garage for the JB Weld I hear a crashing sound come from the baby room - nooooo! I knew exactly what it was and I was not happy! I had set the 4 pieces of the drawer (think of a W shape with a line under the W) up on end while looking for parts and inspecting the broken pieces and this was what fell - fuck! As luck would have it (not really) the piece fell directly onto the front of the crib causing it to take a nice chunk out of the wood and surface as well as just below it a nice dent and scuffed area.

Ugh, you have got to be kidding me, this did not just happen did it! Yes, it did and I was and still am really pissed at myself for being so lame. I am a person that prides myself on always thinking things through down to the smallest detail and always try to error on the side of caution - not this time and look what happened.

On the bright side the makers of the crib - Baby Cache, called us back this morning and they will be able to send us out a few of the cam lock fasteners and even some touch up paint so that I can fix my bonehead dent, scrape and gouge in the front of babies bed.

So there you go, that is the story behind it all and what lead up to me needing to use something like JB Weld to complete the build of something so "simple" as a baby crib.

Today Cicely and I will be painting the letters that we want to put up on babies wall spelling out her name. Then after I need to at some point start the next build, the bassinet. I have a sneaky suspicion that it will be much easier to build but we will see.

Assembled

With that I will consider today's post fully assembled and ready to publish. Time to start getting stuff done and enjoying the day off from work. Cicely is going to meet our friend and coworker Amanda at the chocolate bar for some sugary treats and girl time. I am curious to see how baby reacts to the massive consumption of all things chocolate or covered in chocolate. Cicely may be in for a surprise tonight if baby is on a sugar rush practicing her kung-foo and related!

Photo: The aftermath of the parts falling down and going boom on the front of the crib last night. I know it does not look that bad in the photo, but trust me, after being so careful bringing in all of the parts as well as building it I was really bummed to have this happen to babies brand new $600 crib! Oh well what can you do? On the bright side, it will be something to laugh about one day and hey we have FREE replacement parts and paint on the way! Thank you SO MUCH Baby Cache!
