Today, as mentioned yesterday was a morning that started out with some nice hot coffee followed by 4 hours of supercross racing on SPEED for the season opener from Anaheim, California.
Number 7
Because Ricky Carmichael retired my other favorite racer that I follow is #7 (originally #259) James "Bubba" Stewart. So here I am sitting on the couch, amped up and ready to watch James kick some ass today when my bubble was burst watching the pre-race show. They announced that James had tweaked his right knee in the last lap of the last practice session earlier in the day, shxt!
They were not sure, or at least were not saying if he was going to try and make it to the line for the gates to drop on heat 1 or not. James is strong and fast so he has to be careful like any professional rider. Get a little adrenaline running through the body and pick up the pace to much with an injury and next thing you know you are in the dirt. In the blink of an eye your hopes for finishing a season, much less a championship are null and void at the season opener. Not what you want, it's a long season that leads into a long and competitive outdoor season so you have to stay healthy and unbroken.
Last year was a crazy, injury filled season. Riders breaking their backs, arms, femurs, fibula's, collarbones and everything in between. Nothing really unusual when it comes to motorcycle racing, but to see so much of it in a single season tells me that the guys are really stepping it up and the bikes may be getting a little too powerful as crazy as that probably sounds. The riders are easily seat-bouncing huge triple and quad jumps, something that was unheard of a few years back. While on the bike it is taking every ounce of muscle to hang on.
All-in-all it was an awesome season opener with non-stop, bar-to-bar racing. Stewart ended up finishing 8th when the checkers flew. Better than losing a bunch of points first thing, but not where I hoped to see him finish and I am sure not where his team wanted him.
Last years champ #1 Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki), had a lot of issues and did not start the season the way he wanted to either. It seemed like every few laps the camera was showing him off track or in the dirt picking up his bike. At the checkered it was an awesome last lap pass for the win by #18 Davi Millsaps (Suzuki) who has not had a win since February 2010 at the race in San Diego, California. That means he has been waiting 46 races to get a win and in racing that seems like a lifetime when you are trying to keep sponsors and commitments happy. #41 Trey Canard (Honda) came home second and #5 Ryan Dungey (KTM) took the final podium spot in third. Great racing all around!
I am really stoked to see Davi Millsaps on top and starting out the season as the points leader. Davi is another one of those modest, talented riders that I really like to watch and root for each weekend. Big congrats to him and his team on the win! At the same time, I am glad that #22 Chad Reed (Yamaha) did not do any better than fourth. I used to have more respect for him but I think he is really arrogant and a dirty rider. Don't get me wrong, there is a big difference between aggressive and dirty and he is dirty. I respect that he works hard and is out there every week, but I still think he is a chump.
Resolutioners
Tomorrow is the start of the work week for us and the beginning of hell for me at the gym because of all the resolutioners. On the positive side, it will be a great test of my patients I guess. That is, until the they start to thin out for the year, only to show up once again before summer. and swimsuit season I just have to remember to relax and that the rush of people trying to suddenly get into shape is generally short-lived and things will be back to normal in a few weeks.
I will say though, If you happen to be one of those that are heading back to the gym, best of luck to you and stick with it! There is nothing more annoying or hard on your body than the on again off again mentality that people have when it comes to the gym.
Macarons
Cicely is spoiling me today because she is trying to make homemade macarons. No not macaroons those are coconut flavored (gross!). She is making me lemon flavored and possibly chocolate flavored. Then for her and her step-mom - Kay, she is going to make a batch that is lavender flavored. More on those tomorrow possibly, I am looking forward to 'em big-time this afternoon!
C-Ya'
Time to be "device free and unconnected" for a few hours and do some of the normal Sunday things to prepare for the week ahead. First things first tough, I am going to get started on setting up the SpeakerCraft sound base that I picked up last night. It is going to be a little bit of work since I have to essentially re-route everything in our home entertainment center and possibly make a few trips back and forth to Best Buy to get longer cables and related to make it all work nicely. It will be worth it once it's done though and I am looking forward to watching some of our usual shows as well as movies with the enhanced sound. Enjoy your Sunday!
